HACK’s (Hikes against cruelty to kids)
The NSPCC charity are currently organising a series of sponsored walks referred to as HACK’s (Hikes against cruelty to kids). These are taking place throughout the UK to raise money for vulnerable children. In order for these events to function they rely on the support of dedicated volunteers to help co-ordinate and oversee the whole day.
On behalf of the NSPCC I have been asked to contact you in search of some willing volunteers to help Marshal the next local walk, taking place on the 5th of September in and around the Cotswolds. This will involve being positioned at marshal points along the 20 mile route to help guide and direct walkers and ensure the event runs smoothly.
The HACK location and route is based in the scenic parkland of Cornbury and Blenheim park, so offers a pleasurable day in the countryside. We would greatly appreciate any help you think you may be able to offer, even if it is only a few hours throughout the day.
If you are interested please do take a look at the website and let us know your availability as soon as possible.

Saturday 11 September, 2010
Ride + Stride, a sponsored walking and cycling event between churches. It is a quintessentially British event on Saturday 11th September, which raises money to repair church roofs or fix bell towers – saving church buildings for their communities.
It’s a chance to explore the landscape in a different way and discover some of the glorious church buildings we have. People can choose their own routes, so they can be as energetic as they like, and many of the churches provide delicious home-made refreshments for weary walkers.
Is this something that your group would like to be involved with? More info can be found here - www.rideandstrideuk.org***************************************************************************************************************************

Coast Along for WaterAid 2010
Coast Along aims to have teams of walkers on all sections of coastal path included in the event on the challenge day (Saturday 11th September 2010).
This year we need the support of even more walkers, ramblers and runners to achieve our challenge: to get at least one team walking on all 187 sections of selected coastal paths throughout England, Wales and Scotland to raise money for WaterAid. This is the fourth year of Coast Along but the first time Scottish paths have been included in the event, the Fife Coastal Path and the John Muir Way in East Lothian.
Fourteen regions have been divided into 187 sections of between four and 15 miles in length. Each section is graded as easy, moderate, strenuous or severe, so you can choose a path that suits your level of fitness. There is something for everybody: for families, ramblers, long-distance walkers and even marathon runners.
If you would like to discuss or need more information please contact Paul Davidson via e-mail or on 07875872299.http://www.coastalongforwateraid.org/homepage.asp

The Offa’s Dyke Charity Challenge
Saturday 18 September, 2010
The British Red Cross and North East Wales Search and Rescue are working together to stage a revival of an event that last took place in 2005. The Challenge was first held in 2000 to raise funds for British Red Cross in North Wales, and due to its phenomenal success was held again in 2003 and 2005. And now its back!
Not for the faint-hearted, the challenge is to complete the last 26 miles of the Offa’s Dyke path from Clwyd Gate to Prestatyn, following the Clwydian Mountains, either walking or running! The path rises steeply to the highest point of Moel Fammau, 1,818 feet, and then is a series of sharp climbs and falls, until the eventual spectacular view from the Prestatyn Cliffs of the North Wales coast confirms that the end is in sight!
All you need to do to take part is complete the on-line registration, link below, or call to receive a registration form. Registration is £25 per person.
Money raised from this event will be shared equally between the charities. This will enable the Red Cross to continue to provide key services in the North Wales area. For NEWSAR the emphasis is on replacing the vehicles used by the Rescue Team in emergencies.

Car Free Walks – the Website for ‘Green’ Walkers
Car Free Walks is a website for environmentally friendly walkers. The site is building a database of UK walks that can be reached using public transport. This provides information for people who want to reduce their environmental impact by using their car less frequently.
Registered users of the website can contribute walks. It is free to register, and users complete a simple online form and map to submit their favourite car-free walks. People can send in any type of walk – mountain, countryside, city – but it must be possible to reach the start and finish of the walk using trains or buses.
Visitors to the website will be able to search for walks near to towns or cities, by county or National Park, or by the type of walk. Each walk has an outline of the route, points of interest along the way, and a map showing key points to help with navigation. The website also links to information about public transport to and from the walk.
Tim Woods, who created the site, says Car Free Walks is looking for more environmentally friendly walkers to contribute. He says “We have added our favourite walks, and now we want people from across the UK to contribute theirs. This will make the most of people’s knowledge of the best walks their local area.”
The website helps to address concerns about the increasing environmental impacts of car use in the UK. Co-founder Gary Shipp says “Cars are a major source of carbon emissions in the UK. This website provides information for people to plan car-free walks throughout the UK. Not using a car also helps to ease overcrowding on country roads and reduces parking congestion at the start of popular walks”.
Car Free Walks was launched in October 2007 and now has over 100 routes. The creators are now calling for walkers throughout the UK to log on and start adding more walks.

4th-12th February 2011
Trek Ethiopia Challenge
Transaid are looking to publicize our Trek Ethiopia Challenge, can you help by featuring the attached press release or advert in your magazine or website?
1 in 7 women die during pregnancy and child birth in Niger, a common statistic across Sub Saharan Africa. Transaid is working to reduce the number of these needless deaths in Northern Nigeria by improving the availability of emergency transport to healthcare facilities for pregnant women through the training and encouraging local taxi drivers to transport pregnant women to health centers.
The Trek Ethiopia Challenge will raise funds for current and future Transaid projects. We are now recruiting participants for the Trek to take place in 4th-12th February 2011, where volunteers will get the opportunity to trek through some of the most spectacular scenery in Ethiopia and Africa. The challenge will take volunteers on a trek through the World Heritage protected Simien Mountains up to an altitude of over 4000 metres. Trek Ethiopia is guaranteed to give participants a challenging and rewarding experience of a lifetime.
